Deodorants vs. antiperspirants! A tricky, personal topic but certainly important when considering one’s daily hygiene!

And don’t we all seem to need it more now that the temps are rising and we are all a little “schweddy” these days 🙂 While we need a product that works, it’s also important to find one that doesn’t list ingredients that could potentially cause health issues down the road. And how about something for the active pre-teens in our lives that is also safe! Curious about all this? Read on!

As you know, I’m always on the quest for non-toxic, personal care products. Honestly, I’ve spent several years trying several different brands of chemical free deodorants and have finally whittled my list down to two that do the job! People ask me why I don’t use antiperspirants.

Here’s the deal-most antiperspirants are made with aluminum, which is the active ingredient designed to block our sweat gland to stop perspiration. They also contain parabens and synthetic fragrances which are known endocrine disruptors and can cause a myriad of other health issues. Sweating allows our bodies to get rid of toxins so that makes no sense to me to use an antiperspirant. There’s controversy out there about aluminum, but personally,  I don’t want to put any of that anywhere near my body.

Natural deodorants don’t stop the body’s natural ability to perspire but rather target the bacteria that causes body odor by neutralizing and eliminating it.

I met Jay through my daughter, who mentioned that she has a wonderful friend who had created her own natural deodorants, lotions and lip balms. Well, of course that caught my attention! We met and the rest is history. I love her rose and bergamot deodorant! It WORKS and it’s safe! And she uses all natural ingredients!

Now it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Jay and Naked as a Jaybird!

Jay’s Post: Naked as a Jaybird

Christy Begien | Christy's Non Toxic LifestyleHi! Happy Summer! I’m Jay with Naked as a Jaybird and thrilled to be guest blogging here. Christy and I met a few months ago and share a love for her daughter, Tessa, and a non-toxic lifestyle. She’s inspired me with her story and commitment to removing toxins from her life. At Naked as a Jaybird, I’m making simple and chemical-free body products – lotion, deodorant, and lip balm.

With summer in full swing, deodorant is top of mind for me most days. Here on the western slope, it’s over 100 degrees most days and you can’t help but sweat, even in the dry heat of the high desert! I know that sweat sometimes gets a bad rap, but the truth is this: sweating is an important function of your body and has some pretty amazing side effects. I did a little research to remind me of just how great it is and am happy to share that sweating helps to:*

  • Regulate your body temperature
  • Get you fitter, faster
  • Give you more energy
  • Build strength and keeps away the cramps
  • Keep your liver healthy and guard against infection

Does this sound as good to you as it does to me? Part of my journey to health has been focused on doing what’s right for my body. My lotion and lip balm were developed with this in mind – making simple products that would nourish my body in the best way possible.

I’ve also taken this approach with my deodorant. Simple formulas made with a few ingredients that you can pronounce. Formulas that will let your body sweat in the way that it was designed, but keep you from stinking while you are at it. I’ve spent the last six months putting my favorite varieties to the test – hot yoga, hiking, high-desert living, and the stress of day-to-day life. I am confident in recommending these formulas as a safe way to keep your stink at bay – for people of all ages!

This travel kit includes deodorant, lotions and lip balms!

Essential oils are on the front lines of these amazing deodorants and you might find that these are helpful around your own home and life as you continue your journey to a non-toxic life!

  • Tea Tree: It’s a power deodorizing agent! It eliminates any body odor smell and the bacteria and toxins that can increase its potency. Tea tree generally boosts health and promotes the absorption of nutrients from food and gives protection from diseases. This powerful antioxidant is a great addition to your daily routine.
  • Bergamot: It’s a natural disinfectant with a refreshing aroma! The disinfectant properties inhibit the growth of germs causing body-odor. Bergamot also creates a feeling of freshness, joy and energy keeping you up and going all day. I’ve been known to put some in my dryer or diffuser, it’s just that good.

Are you traveling this summer? Don’t sweat the details with the Naked as a Jaybird Travel Kit! Lotion, deodorant, and lip balm in a wonderful canvas bag and TSA complaint… it’s ready to hit the road with you and it’s great to be able to carry on lotion! It’s a solid win! Here’s to summer!

I can’t recommend her TSA-compliant travel kit enough with “small” bottles in lieu of trying to pack your favorite larger bottles in your luggage. Always bulky and adds weight-so not necessary. Peace and Good Health!
