Avocados are not only an exceptionally nutritious super-food, they have topped the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) list of The Clean 15. According to EWG, fruits and vegetables on the list had the lowest pesticide load, and consequently are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume from the standpoint of pesticide contamination.

Just like with The Dirty Dozen, I use the EWG’s annual Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides to inform my organic Vs. conventionally grown fruits and veggies.

Each year, the EWG breaks down which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticides — The Dirty Dozen. They also note the one’s have the least – The Clean 15. The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to make food supply more transparent in order to help consumers decide when it’s worth spending extra for organic produce.

In today’s ever more challenging economy, it’s important to have options. Generally, I advocate going organic, especially with the DIRTY DOZEN.  When that is not an option, using The Clean 15 and The Dirty Dozen as guidelines for when compromises have to be made.

Good to know. My son eats avocados like other kids eat chips. They’re gone before I even get one.
