Sunny, warm days are upon us, and in this pandemic our need for fresh air, Vitamin D and exercise are ever important to our well-being. While it’s important to get the necessary Vitamin D from the sun each day, it’s also important to protect our skin, especially our tender scalps, face, eyes and ears. And why not be fashionable while we’re at it! It’s all about the “Hatitude!”
I’ve always been a hat girl, but especially since moving back to Denver 10 years ago. I wear a hat year-round and on the very few days I’ve not worn one, people actually comment and say, “I don’t recognize you without a hat!” There are some great hat companies out there that I like, and they don’t break the bank. And, as most of you know, a hat works wonders on a bad hair day!! Here are a few of my favorites.
Wallaroo Hat Company
I’m sure many of you have heard of the Wallaroo Hat Company. Of course, I love the fact they’re based right up the road in Boulder. All of their hats are tested and rated according to their UV-blocking capabilities, and they offer hats for men, women and children. Most of them are priced for under $50! And, they offer a wide range of styles including, bucket, fedora and wide brim. Something for everyone! I also love them because they are forgiving; many of them can be folded up for traveling and can be cleaned easily.
In 2016, Wallaroo Hat Company joined the ranks as a Certified B Corporation®. “We invested significant time and energy into improving our organization to meet nonprofit B Lab’s rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Their hats are sold in so many places so check out the site and a retail location near you. Online sales might be a bit slow right now but be patient if you decide to order.
As they like to say, “It’s a Sunny Life. Wear Your Hat.” www.wallaroo.com
Coolibar
Coolibar is another great company and I have a couple of their hats for time in the sun. All Coolibar fabrics have been approved as an effective UV protectant for covered areas and they are the first clothing company to receive the Skin Cancer Foundations’ Seal of Recommendation! In addition to hats, they offer fashionable sun protection in clothing for men, women and children with a lifetime guarantee, most with 50+ protection. www.coolibar.com
How to choose a hat? Here’s what they recommend, and I agree! I tend to go for full face protection, but that’s just me.
“We recommend a 3” brim or larger for good protection followed by a broad-spectrum sunscreen on one’s face and neck. From there, it really depends on your activity. At the end of the day, any UPF 50+ hat you like is a great hat because you’ll wear it.”
UV-Skinz
And last but not least, is UV-Skinz, a company founded by Rhonda Sparks, who lost her husband to skin cancer. A family business with a solid mission for sun safety, they also offer affordable hat and clothing protection for everyone in the family. If you’re new to their site, they’re offering a 20% discount on first orders. They are recognized by the Skin Cancer Foundation for their excellent products. Great hats and products for everyone in the family! www.uvskinz.com
Along with so many of you, I’m personally grateful that we are entering the summer season during this pandemic. None of us are dressing for special events that have been cancelled, but if you can, I highly recommend finding a hat (or two) that lifts you up on your daily stroll, along with giving you some needed facial protection. A little pop of red lipstick doesn’t hurt either!
Be well and enjoy some Hatitude!
